Children’s entertainer David Chicken & his fantastic crew won an Emmy Award through the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for David’s first DVD, The Adventures Of … David Chicken (available at the Chicken Store). The Emmy was awarded in the “Arts / Entertainment – Program / Special” category.
How did David & crew end up with an Emmy? It all started with David’s involvement with the ALLenReads program. David did a live show at the Allen Public Library in 2007 and Allen City Television (ACTV) filmed it. They started airing the show and were “impressed with David’s talent,” so they proposed filming a music video with David. “Book a Trip” promotes reading so it was a natural fit with their reading program and children’s music. Directed by Mark Kaufmann with ACTV, “Book a Trip” was filmed in the Allen Public Library and aired on ACTV shortly after that.
After airing the live concert footage and “Book A Trip” and receiving “rave reviews”, ACTV started airing David’s DVD as well, divided into segments that aired like a series. Since ACTV aired the DVD and “Book a Trip”, they qualified for entry into the competition and both received a nomination.
David was thankful to have Mama Chicken in attendance at the event in Houston. Also in attendance were John & Christina Kenny (John is Producer & “Smiley McGee” in the DVD) and Mark Kaufmann & Scott Evans with the City of Allen.
David would also like to thank business partner Glenn Hadsall, who helped enormously with the DVD. All were extremely excited and honored to win!
Drawn to art and music since he was a child, David McMahon was destined to be David Chicken and create children’s music. From painting and guitar lessons to eventually performing in various bands, David had a flare for performing that didn’t quite fit in with the typical rock band.
After graduating from the University of North Texas, David began performing across the country, first as the “Toyologist” – a character he developed for Toys “R” Us – and soon thereafter as David Chicken. He saw firsthand how music could bring smiles and laughter to kids and parents alike, through positive messages inspiring creativity, exercise and learning.
Ten years later, David has performed internationally and created three CDs and two DVDs filled with super-catchy original music and characters. He has also won three Emmy® Awards through the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). In addition to these accomplishments, David’s song & video “Book a Trip”, which promotes reading, recently won a first place award in the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors.
The signs were all there. Growing up, David was a fan of the TV show Green Acres. While in college, David had a chicken named Henrietta (and a pig named Arnold, but that’s another story). He ended up with the nickname “David McChicken.” That name eventually became David Chicken when it was time for a fun and memorable moniker for creating children’s music.
A few thoughts from David …
“This is what I truly love doing. It is an honor to be have families enjoy my children’s music so much. I am thankful for each and every child who has ever danced or sang along to one of my songs. To share a laugh or a smile with them makes my whole life shine.
I vividly remember being a kid and wondering how adults could know how to make music and cartoons that kids would enjoy. What did they know? They were adults! Thankfully I found out years later; some adults don’t forget what’s it’s like to be a kid. And those are the ones who end up singing and dancing with a chicken on their head!”
Jane McMahon has loved entertaining her whole life. From her “humorous readings” in elementary school to her singing and dancing performances with David Chicken, she is a rock star by herself. She steals the show every single time with her loving and grandmotherly
demeanor and instantly becomes a friend to all. Mama Chicken sings backing vocals – and occasional lead rap – on David’s songs and videos.
As a working mom for many years, she knows the importance of making time, as a family, to enjoy quality entertainment together.
Also an ace in the kitchen, some of her delicious recipes are featured on David’s site. Her culinary skills were immortalized in the song “Mama Chicken’s Kitchen” and are featured in David’s latest Emmy-Winning DVD, Book a Trip with David Chicken.
Jane’s mother, Marie Ruth, traveled with the Chautauqua – a touring vaudeville company featuring such greats as Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy. Marie passed the love of entertaining on to her daughter and grandson. David and Jane are happy to carry on the family tradition.
“It’s a pleasure to be able to perform with David on stage. To see all the joy it brings children warms my heart. I know that David’s grandmother Marie is watching and she’s very proud of him and his children’s music.”
Super Chachie (and his twin sister Super Joanie) aren’t your ordinary Chihuahuas. These are high-flying, super trickster, hopping and bopping superhero Chihuahuas! Their amazing tricks and adventures are featured in all of David’s CDs and DVDs. Super Chachie also performs
at many of David’s concerts, to the delight of parents and awe-struck kids. See some of their superstar tricks here!
